The original John O’Groats restaurant is located on Pico Boulevard. This small diner expanded over decades, and is one of the West Side’s most popular breakfast and lunch destinations, known for excellent food and service, and its eclectic “grandma’s kitchen” look.
The owner charged us to take this eclectic look and to create a higher level restaurant serving 3 meals. We also had to incorporate the parking garage entrance plinth in the hub of the raw space. We referenced Norman Rockwell’s Diners; we took inspiration from the Pico checkerboard VCT and wall paper, and replaced that with Acrylic rail inserts and Italian tile. We added period ceilings, lights and fans, and using the change in elevation, we created rooms without walls that are distinct and comfortable. We also expanded outside to create a delightful dining patio.
The client is very happy, and has long lines on Saturday and Sunday mornings!
